Chartered in 1847, it was named for President John Tyler. Its diversified economy is based on oil, manufacturing and agriculture (especially rose bushes). The city is the site of Texas College, University of Texas at Tyler, and Tyler Junior College. It also is home to the "Apache Belles," famous precision dance-drill team.
