Originally known as Bright Star, the town changed its name to Sulphur Springs in 1871 because of the many mineral springs in the area. The county is a state leader in dairy production, is well-known for beef cattle production and is a center for national and regional manufacturing. The town offers many annual festivals and events. It also provides access to East Texas lake country.
