This city, established in 1899, is a retail, banking and commercial center for a three-county area. It was developed as a project of the Texas Central Railroad and was named after the railroad president's Connecticut hometown.

The city is known for its Texas Cowboy Reunion held around July 4. The Reunion was started in 1930 and continues to be the greatest amateur rodeo in the world. The population of city more than triples when rodeo contestants and spectators converge.
