Palmito Ranch Battlefield

On May 12, 1865, Union and Confederate troops clashed on the northern banks of the Rio Grande River in the last land battle of the Civil War. Troops had not heard of Lee's surrender a month earlier, and Confederate troops were victorious after a two-day battle.

A historical marker is on Texas 4 (Boca Ricia Road) approximately 12 miles east of Brownsville.
