Yorktown Historical Museum

This museum in two historic buildings, both on the National Register of Historic Places, features exhibits on area history, including a hand-operated elevator, a 1900s fire wagon, the first area "lawman's" pistol, Native American arrowheads and an antique doll collection. Gift shop. Open 2:30–4:30 p.m. Thu. and Sun., and the first Sat. of month 10 a.m.–4 p.m. West Main Street at Eckhardt Street. 361/564-2661.

Featured Attraction

Museum, opened in 2002, celebrates the unique history of Thurber, which went from boom town to ghost town in almost a blink of an eye. Visitors can see exhibits, artifacts, and more that detail how the mining, brick and oil industries shaped the town's rise and ultimate fall. Museum named for William Knox Gordon Sr., best known for his role in the Ranger Oil Field discovery. Open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tue.–Sat. and 1–4 p.m. Sun. From I-20, take Exit 367 (Thurber/Mingus). The museum is on the south side of the interstate. 254/968-1886.
