Y.O. Ranch

Y.O. Ranch

Established in 1880 by Capt. Charles Schreiner (see KERRVILLE), the vast ranch is one of Southwest’s largest deer and exotic game preserves. Guided hunting tours throughout year (but only during seasons for native species) can produce such trophies as blackbuck antelope of India (the Y.O. has more blackbuck than remain in their native habitat in India), wild Corsican ram, East African oryx, Axis deer and aoudad sheep. Both resident and nonresident hunting licenses available at ranch. Hunting fee guarantees success, or no charge. Photo safaris year-round, and summer adventure camp for youths; fees. Substantial herd of Texas longhorn cattle. Several historic buildings are preserved on ranch, including stagecoach stop from 1850s; Wells Fargo office from near Boerne; pioneer cabin from near Fredericksburg, and pioneer schoolhouse. 2,110-foot sod airstrip. Daily tour (reservations required; 830/640-3222) at 10 a.m., includes lunch. Overnight accommodations; swimming pool, nature trails, horseback riding. Ranch entrance is 15 miles west of Mountain Home on Texas 41; ranch headquarters 8 miles north of entrance.

Featured Attraction

Southern Pacific steam engine No. 786 is the centerpiece of the Austin Steam Train Association's historic excursion operations. When undergoing maintenance, a 1960 ALCO Diesel locomotive (last operating engine of its kind) fills in. Two regularly scheduled uninterrupted runs with diesel locomotives––the Hill Country Flyer and the Bertram Flyer.

The Hill Country Flyer departs Cedar Park Saturday mornings for a 66-mile, round-trip ride through Texas Hill Country to Burnet. Before their return trip, passengers have time to picnic at a nearby park or at a nearby restaurant, and shop on the square the way early Austinites spent their daytrips.

The Bertram Flyer departs Cedar Park on Sundays for a three-hour round-trip excursion to Bertam. The trip includes a short stop to explore the restored historic 1912 depot before returning to Cedar Park.

The Twilight Flyers offer murder mysteries, children's storybook specials, romantic evenings for two, the North Pole Flyer and more. Early booking recommended. See website for train schedule. 512/477-8468. www.austinsteamtrain.org.
