World Birding Center-Resaca De La Palma State Park

This site boasts the largest tract of native habitat in the World Birding Center network. Etched by ancient curves of the Rio Grande, its 1,700 semi-tropical acres provide a quiet birding retreat. Colorful Neotropical and Nearctic migrants—like the summer tanager, American redstart and yellow-breasted chat—have been seen. When resaca levels are controlled to benefit wildlife, species like the least grebe, black-bellied whistling duck, purple gallinule and various herons, as well as migrating waterfowl, should congregate here. Open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat. Park offices may be closed during certain days of non-peak season—contact the park for information. Admission charge. 1000 New Carmen Road, four miles west of Brownsville on U.S. 281. 956/565-3919. www.worldbirdingcenter.org/sites/brownsville/index.phtml.
