Fort Worth's Stockyards National Historic District

Stockyards National Historic District

The feel of the Old West is recaptured along Exchange Avenue on the city's North Side with renovated Western-style stores and restaurants along traditional boardwalks.

The White Elephant Saloon features live country music nightly, and it is the site of the "Last Great Gunfight of the Old West" re-enactment every February. 106 E. Exchange Ave. 817/624-8273.

Stockyards Station, a 165,000-square-foot market center includes a stop for the Grapevine Vintage Railroad and Western festival market in the renovated hog and sheep pens. Restaurants, shops, and galleries feature a variety of Western and Native American crafts. Historical walking tour available. 140 E. Exchange Ave. 817/625-9715. www.stockyardstation.com.

The Visitors Information Center provides details about area features, shopping and dining opportunities, along with the Cowtown Rodeo schedule. Open 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat. and noon–5 p.m. Sun. 130 E. Exchange Ave. 817/624-4741.

This museum has a living collection. Botanical Gardens feature outdoor and indoor educational exhibitions with plant displays, butterfly, touch and smell, and other demonstration gardens. The Mary Bivins Tropical Conservatory glass pyramid has more than 6,000 square feet of tropical flora and fauna. Enjoy concerts in the garden on Monday nights from June–August.
