Starr Family State Historic Site in Marshall

Starr Family Home State Historic Site

Composed of several elegant structures, including the Starr-Blake Home and the Maplecroft mansion—the focal point of the grounds—this site illustrates the 150-year history of the Starr family in Texas. This Texas Historical Commission property features period furnishings, clothing and antiques that trace the transition of the buildings through four generations of the Starr family. Featured Attraction

On six acres in Riverside Park, the zoo provides an opportunity to see more than 150 animals native to the state, as well as other exotic animals from all over the world. Spacious, outdoor moat-enclosed areas exhibit a variety of animals in natural environmental settings. The Animal Kingdom building provides a majestic array of reptiles, birds and small mammals. Guests can interact with animals in the petting zoo and learn about conservation through education programs. The Texas Zoo was proclaimed the "National Zoo of Texas" in June 1984 by a Texas House and Senate Resolution. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily; closed Dec. 24–25 and New Year's Day.
