On May 12, 1865, Union and Confederate troops clashed on the northern banks
of the Rio Grande River, east of Brownsville, in the last land battle of the
Civil War. Troops had not heard of Lee's surrender at Appomattox a month
earlier, and Confederate troops were victorious after a two-day battle. A
historical marker is 12 miles east on Texas 4.
