Photographer: Kevin Stillman

Serbin Community/Wendish Museum

This community, settled by German Wends, is six miles south on F.M. 2239. St. Paul's Lutheran Church—one of the area's famous "painted churches"—was built in 1870 and features hand-painted marble accents. The pulpit, in the upper level of church, is the tallest in Texas. 1578 C.R. 211.

The Wendish Museum is a collection of memorabilia depicting the life of these ethnically unique people. Outside exhibits include a Wendish pioneer log cabin, part of an dogtrot house and farming equipment. Open 1–5 p.m. Tue.–Sun. 1011 C.R. 212, north of St. Paul Lutheran Church and adjacent to the Wendish Cemetery. Admission charge. 979/366-2441. www.texaswendish.org.

When founded, the mission pueblo was south of the Rio Grande, but it was left on the Texas side by changes in the river channel. Some mission land has been in constant cultivation since 1682. 100 block of Old Pueblo Road. ( Zaragosa exit from I-10 East ). 915/859-9848. www.ysletamission.org.
