San Jacinto County Museum in Coldspring

San Jacinto County Museum

Housed in the handsome, restored jail, circa 1887, the museum interprets life of the early settlers with farm and forest implements, household articles, historic photos, weapons and law enforcement artifacts. Cell block, hangman's drop and jailer's quarters still exist. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Thu.–Sat. On Slade Street in Old Town area. 936/653-2009.

Featured Attraction

This 109,000-square-foot facility features Western and American art. It was first opened to house Amon G. Carter Sr.'s collection of 400 paintings, drawings and works of sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The museum has gradually expanded to include works from a vast array of artists, from Frederic Edwin Church to Georgia O'Keeffe. The American photography collection, one of the largest in the country, began in 1961 with Dorthea Lange's portrait of Charles M. Russell and now includes works by Matthew Brady, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand. In the Cultural District. Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tue.–Wed. and Fri.–Sat., 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Thu. and noon–5 p.m. Sun. Drop-in tours at 2 p.m. Tue.–Sun. Closed on major holidays.
