Republic Of Texas Plaza

Dedicated during the sesquicentennial, it features a statue of Ashbel Smith, one of city's early settlers and leader for advancement of education in Texas. A historical marker in the city identifies Smith's home, "Evergreen," overlooking Tabbs Bay. The Baytown Historical Preservation Association maintains and interprets an outdoor living history museum at the plaza. The restored 1894 Wooster Common School No. 38 is the oldest "one-room" schoolhouse in Harris County. Free tours on the last Saturday each month, except holidays and during inclement weather. Group tours available by appointment. www.baytownhistory.org.

The Fulton Mansion, a Texas Historical Commission property, sits impressively overlooking the Aransas Bay and is surrounded by stately oaks. Learn about George Fulton's engineering skills, take a walk through Harriet Fulton's gardens and hear stories about living in this grand Victorian villa, called Oakhurst. Open 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Tue.–Sat. and 1–3 p.m. Sun. Guided tours offered on the hour. Admission charge. 317 S. Fulton Beach Road. 361/729-0386. www.visitfultonmansion.com.
