Ray Roberts Lake State Park near Pilot Point

Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Isle du Bois Unit includes 1,397 acres in the wooded area on the south side of Ray Roberts Lake. Camping, boating, swimming, fishing, an overnight group pavilion and day-use group picnic area are also available. A 12-mile multiuse trail is offered for hiking, bicycling and equestrian use (your horse). Johnson Branch Unit offers fishing, sailing, swimming or water skiing as well as camping and nine miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Jordan Park features the Lantana Lodge, a full-service resort and restaurant overlooking the lake on the eastern shores just two miles from city. 940/686-0261.

This 2,500-acre nature preserve is in southeast Harris County at the southern end of city, very close to Space Center Houston. The preserve is in the Central Flyway, which is the largest migratory bird route in North America. More than 220 species of birds and more than 350 species of wildlife may be seen. The preserve encompasses three major ecosystems: hardwood forest, tall grass prairie and the estuarine bayou. Visitors can enjoy a bird blind with interpretive material, more than five miles of trails and a late 1800s farm site. Weekend visitors may enjoy demonstrations and guided walks. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Tue.–Sat. and noon–5 p.m. Sun. Last entry at 4 p.m. Closed major holidays. 8500 Bay Area Blvd. Seven miles east of I-45. 281/474-2551. www.abnc.org.
