Rising from the flat, coastal plains, this temple, built in the style of
those in southern India, is dedicated to the Goddess Meenakshi and is the only
temple for the goddess outside of India. This temple celebrates several
traditions of Hindu worship through festivals and rites of passage, which have
been supplemented by new rituals in order to meet the cultural challenges of
living in America. The temple holds religious discourses and workshops, as well
as educational activities, centered on the Indian classical arts. It also houses
a library. Open 8:30 a.m.–noon and 5–8:30 p.m. Mon.–Thu., 8:30 a.m.–noon and 5–9
p.m. Fri., and 8:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Sat.–Sun. and holidays. 17130 McLean Road.
