Featured Attraction

On a bluff overlooking the Brazos River, this Texas Historical Commission property commemorates where Stephen F. Austin established the municipality of San Felipe in Mexican Texas in 1824 as the first Anglo-American settlement in Texas. From 1824–36, San Felipe de Austin was the social, economic and political center of Austin's colony, as well as—briefly—the provisional capital of the Texas Revolution. The site features a statue of Austin, "The Father of Texas"; a replica of Austin's dog-run log cabin, where he conducted the business of the first colonists; and the 1847 J.J. Josey Store, which serves as the site's visitor center. New exhibits opened in 2011 to commemorate the memorial site and support a visitor information center in the store. Grounds open during daylight hours. Visitor center open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Tue.–Sun. 979/885-2181. www.visitsanfelipedeaustin.com.
