Located on Washington Square in the heart of the city, this is the oldest university building in the state and one of the three oldest school buildings in Texas. The Greek Revival building was opened in 1859 to house a university chartered by the Republic. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to education in Texas during the 19th century with items from a Confederate Hospital—one was housed in the building during the Civil War. Open 1–4 p.m. Tue.–Fri. and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat. Mound and Hughes streets. 936/569-7292.
