Most remote gig in Texas you have ever played?
I played drums in a country and western band at a barn dance in East Texas. On the weekends, people showed up from miles around at this big tin dance hall, and it was the first and only time I have ever played drums in public.
What''s your definition of Texas music?
There have been many cultures and many influences in Texas that have combined to create a type of music that is more an ethic than an aesthetic. So much great music has come out of Texas, it’s hard to know where to start. Texas has made room for all kinds of music and has for many years been a breeding ground for music that is not easily categorized, which is a great thing because, well, categories are just not that interesting.
Best place to see Texas music?
Texas has one of the best concert halls in the world in Bass Hall in Fort Worth. Any type of music sounds good there, not just Texas music. And, of course, Antone’s Nightclub in Austin, a great pure music venue in one of the country’s great music towns.
Favorite Texas album?
That is an impossible question to answer. But to get to the core of the thing, I would recommend Blind Lemon Jefferson Volumes One and Two on Document Records.
Place you''d take someone who''s never been to Texas?
Alpine, just down the road from Marfa.
