Most remote gig in Texas you have ever played?
One time Rhett and I went to do a duo show in Amarillo. It was a last-minute thing – we probably knew about it the day before, so there was no advance promotion, nothing – just a seven-hour drive from Dallas to Amarillo, play, come right back. I think it was the first time we had ever slept in a motel, though, in connection with a music show. That was a first. We would normally beg a couch at the end of the night or, in one or two cases, sleep in our car. Salad days for sure! -Murry
What''s your definition of Texas music?
Texas music falls firmly out of the normal country industry of Nashville, New York and Los Angeles. It’s not bluegrass, it’s western, of the old order, with traces of German beer-hall music mixed with the old cowboy songs and ballads. -Murry
Best place to see Texas music?
It's hard to beat Stubb's Backyard on a cool spring evening.
Favorite Texas album?
Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. Recorded in Dallas at the studio where Murry and I later recorded our Sleepy Heroes record. -Rhett
Place you''d take someone who''s never been to Texas?
Caddo Lake and Jefferson. -Murry
Where in Texas feels most unlike Texas?
A Dallas Stars game. I would have to say that if you had told me when I was a kid that someday 17,000 Texans a night would pack an arena to watch hockey, I would have said you are nuts. -Ken
