Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg

Museum Of South Texas History

Founded as the Hildalgo County Historical Museum in 1967, exhibits cover the history of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico from prehistoric times to 1900. Permanent exhibits installed in the $2.5 million wing start with a sea dinosaur and a 14-foot skeleton of an Ice-Age mammoth. The museum also features exhibits on the Coahuiltecan people, Spanish exploration and colonization, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Steamboat-era and more. Open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tue.–Sat. and 1–5 p.m. Sun. Admission charge. 200 N. Closner Blvd. 956/383-6911.

Featured Attraction

This small park pays tribute to the cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail. This was the last stop in Texas before heading to northern markets using The Great Texas Cattle Trails, including the Chisholm and Goodnight trails. Nine life-size longhorns and two roving cowboys, made of steel, recall those early cattle drives. Wise Street at U.S. 81.
