Mission Senora de los Dolores de los Ais in San Augustine
Photographer: Stan A. Williams

Mission Senora De Los Dolores De Los Ais

Established in 1717, the mission was abandoned because of a French invasion in 1719. It was restored in 1721 near an Ais village. It closed again in 1773 when the Spanish evacuated all East Texas missions. Until recently, only historical markers identified the site. A city park—complete with RV campsites, tent camping, group shelters and walking trails—now marks the location. The Mission Dolores Visitor Center houses an interactive and interpretive display relating to the original mission and the El Camino Real de los Tejas visitor center. Park land stretches along both sides of Texas 147, four blocks south of the courthouse. 701 S. Broadway. 936/275-3815.
