Mercer Arboretum And Botanical Gardens

This nationally recognized 250-acre facility along Cypress Creek features the Gulf Coast's largest display of native and cultivated plants. Enjoy more than 20 different gardens, five miles of nature trails, picnic area and playground. Open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24–25 and Jan. 1. Featured Attraction

Restored 1901 Missouri Pacific Railroad depot houses a county history museum in an old waiting room and office. Warehouse portion is a hands-on learning center for children ages 3 to 11. A restored 1908 "Arnold Outhouse," an ornate, gingerbread-style, "three-holer"—the first in the state to receive a historical marker—is on the grounds. The grounds also include a restored 1841 log cabin, a barn, broom shop, 1881 doctor's office and restored 1880s dogtrot cabin. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri. and 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Sat. Closed national and state holidays. Admission charge. 514 N. High St. 903/657-4303.
