Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park

Two blocks south of U.S. 290 between Avenues F and G. Main headquarters features visitor center, bookstore, exhibits, and auditorium that plays films on LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson. Down the street, with guided tours daily, is frame structure where a young Lyndon Johnson lived while attending public school. The home is more than 100 years old, and furnishings include Johnson family household items and period furniture restored to the 1920 era. Tours of the home are given on the half-hour, except during the lunch hour. One block west, via a nature trail, is Johnson Settlement, which was owned (1867–72) by the president's grandfather and great-uncle, and was the gathering point of seven-county area for cattle drives. The rustic 1856 dog-trot cabin, 1880 stone farm buildings, exhibit center and pastures with grazing Texas longhorn cattle reflect frontier heritage. Operated by the National Park Service as part of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park that includes the LBJ Ranch (See STONEWALL ). In a sloping basin among the scenic Davis Mountains, the 1,869-acre park host more than 155,000 visitors annually. A free interpretive center is open afternoons June–August. It features plant and animal material, both live and mounted; a bird observation window; and a wildlife watering station. Camping, picnicking, dining room, trailer facilities, rest rooms, nature study and hiking are available. Admission charge. Indian Lodge — On the slopes of the Davis Mountains, this rustic inn was built in the 1930s and was modeled after Southwestern pueblos. Admission charge. 432/426-3254.
