Living History - Farm in LBJ country at Stonewall

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park

The LBJ Ranch was not only the ancestral home of the 36th President but also a place where national decisions were made. A ranger-guided visit to the restored Texas White House gives visitors the opportunity to consider the historic impacts of the LBJ Presidency.

Access to the LBJ Ranch is by self-guided, self-paced tour via visitors' private vehicle. To enter the LBJ Ranch, obtain a free permit at the LBJ State Park Visitor Center. Guests also will be given a map and CD with narration about each of the sites along the tour route. Stops along the one-way route include the Junction School where President Lyndon B. Johnson began his schooling at the age of 4, his reconstructed birthplace, the Johnson family cemetery where President and Mrs. Johnson are buried, the last home of the president's grandparents, the show barn where the Hereford cattle are on display, and the Texas White House complex of buildings. Tickets for the ranger guided tours of the Texas White House are given out at the LBJ Ranch Hangar for a fee. The permits are issued from 9 a.m.–4:15 p.m. Open 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. daily. The tours of the Texas White House are 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Operated by the National Park Service as part of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park that includes the Johnson Boyhood Home (see JOHNSON CITY). For information: PO Box 329, Johnson City 78636. 830/868-7128, ext. 231 or 244. www.nps.gov/lyjo.
