More than 40 species of birds nest in this 24,356-acre marshland on East Galveston Bay, about 18 miles southeast of Anahuac. It's managed primarily for wintering and migrating waterfowl. The threatened American alligator also is found here. Find 253 species from the bird checklist—many birds flying north across the Gulf of Mexico make this their a first resting place on land. Refuge activities include wildlife observation, birding, photography, waterfowl hunting, fishing and crabbing. Overnight camping is limited, both in duration and location.
