This WWII prisoner-of-war internment camp once housed as many as 5,000 personnel and prisoners, most from Germany, from 1942–46. The prisoners entertained themselves and passed the time with elaborate stage productions, musicals and the construction of numerous castles and fountains using available native materials. Though many of these were torn down, remnants and artifacts uncovered in excavations can be seen today, along with an exhibit on life in the camp in a replica army barracks. Group tours to the campsite may be arranged with the chamber.
