Geese set to the air at the King Ranch

King Ranch

This National Historic Landmark was established in 1853 when Capt. Richard King purchased 68,500 acres that had been Spanish and Mexican land grants called Santa Gertrudis. The now-famous Santa Gertrudis breed, first strain of beef cattle originating in Western Hemisphere, was developed here. Today, King Ranch sprawls across 825,000 acres of South Texas land, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. It remains a working ranch with 60,000 head of cattle and 300 quarter horses.

Historical and guided tours are offered daily. Nature tours showcase the ranch's abundant wildlife and birds. Available by reservation. Special group tours also are available. King Ranch Visitor Center is open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Sat. and noon–5 p.m. Sun. Admission charge. Entrance is immediately west of Kingsville off Texas 141. Tour information and reservations: 361/592-8055.
