Founded in 1950, the zoo is named in honor of Gainesville native and
adventurer of "bring 'em back alive" fame, Frank Buck. The 25-acre facility, one
of the oldest zoos the state, is undergoing an ambitious makeover that divides
the facility into three geographic regions: African Savannah, North America and
South America. Each region displays animals in naturalistic settings with a
focus on conservation. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily (until 6 p.m. June–Aug.) Closed
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In Leonard Park, which offers parking,
picnicking and recreational facilities. Exit 496B off I-35 and head west on
California St. www.frankbuckzoo.com.
