A natural area owned and operated by the Chihuahuan Desert Research
Institute, the center is dedicated to promoting the Chihuahuan Desert region
through research and education. Visitors will find canyon springs, stately
madrones, Montezuma quail and many other hidden treasures. Included are a cactus
and succulent greenhouse, a 20-acre botanical garden, indoor and outdoor
interpretive exhibits, easy to moderately strenuous hiking trails, and a gift
shop. A self-guided tour of the botanical gardens and Modesta Canyon
interpretive trail guides are available. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; programs
for tour or school groups by arrangement. Admission charge. Four miles south of
