The oldest community in the present boundaries of Texas is now part of the
city of El Paso. It was established in 1681 by refugees from a bloody uprising
that expelled the Spanish and Christian Native Americans from present day New
Mexico. Spanish missionaries and loyal Tigua settled at El Paso del Norte and
built Ysleta Mission. The mission church is still the religious focal point of
the Tigua community.
The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Cultural Center is owned and operated by the Tigua
tribe. It features a museum, gift shop, Native American social dancing and the
Cacique Cafe. Open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tue.–Fri. and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun. 305 Yaya
Lane (off Socorro Road). 915/859-7913.
