Howard House Museum

This Greek Revival structure, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, was built in the mid-1880s by Judge Reuben Reeves. It was sold to Col. George Robert Howard in 1850 and remained with the Howard family until it was sold to the city in 1963. The museum contains period furnishings and exhibits. Open noon–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun. Featured Attraction

Housed in the old City Hall, built in 1940 by the WPA, this museum features butterfly displays, a Smithsonian-quality exhibit of bird eggs, violins, wood carvings, arrowheads and changing exhibits. It also is home to the Don Meredith Memorabilia Exhibit, which features sports items donated by the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Mount Vernon native. Open 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Tue.–Sat.
