Historic Homes

Many of the city's fine old homes are open during the annual Historical Pilgrimage the first weekend in May and Candlelight Tour first two weekends in December. Most are on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are available. Tour times: 903/665-2672. www.jefferson-texas.com.

House of the Seasons — Built in 1872, this is an example of the transition period between Greek Revival and Victorian architecture. The most interesting interior feature of the house is the dome containing beautiful frescoes. Each side of the cupola features a different color window panel illustrating the four seasons of the year, and those colors are reflected throughout the house. Tours at 11 a.m. daily. Admission charge. 40 S. Alley St. 903/665-8000.

The city's finest collection of art objects, paintings and sculpture is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Among the superb displays is the Finnigan collection of ancient art from Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Straus collection features Renaissance paintings and bronzes. Visitors also will find Native American art of the Southwest; Frederic Remington's robust masterpieces; native arts from Africa, Australia and South Pacific; and a special Junior Gallery with changing exhibits that appeal to youngsters. The Cullen Sculpture Garden, displaying fine sculpture outdoors, is across from the museum. Open 10 a.m.–10 p.m.
