Featured Attraction

This museum, housed in a former City Hall/Fire Station/Jail built in 1884, underwent a complete interior renovation in 2000. Visitors enter the exhibit area through an 1870s log cabin, original to Cooke County. Changing exhibits focus on different aspects of pioneer life and the county's history, from Native American life to the Civil War, cattle drives, immigrants, discovery of oil, the formation of the Gainesville Community Circus and construction of Camp Howze during WWII.

Several pieces of stained glass dating to the early 20th century are on permanent display, including a large skylight that is the focal point of the museum. A series of advertising mirrors from the same era also are shown. The building is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tue.–Fri. and 2–5 p.m. Sat. 210 S. Dixon St. 940/668-8900. mortonmuseum@att.net. www.mortonmuseum.org.
