High Island Boy Scout Wood And Smith Oaks Nature Sanctuaries

Owned by the Houston Audubon Society, these bird sanctuaries are located on a salt dome that stands out above the surrounding marshland. Spring migration is usually mid-March–mid-May; fall migration is Aug.–Oct. Open sunrise–sunset. Admission charge. About 47 miles south of Beaumont off of Texas 124 in High Island. 713/932-1639.

Outdoor, musical theater in Palo Duro Canyon State Park depicts the historical romance of the West and the settlement of Texas in the 1800s. With a 600-foot cliff as the backdrop, live music, dance, and state-of-the-art light and sound effects, Pioneer Amphitheatre provides one of the most spectacular theatrical experiences in the nation.
