Guess Nature Trail

This half-mile trail is included in the state's Central Coast section of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Two bird-watching platforms are available. White-tailed hawk, wrens, long-billed thrasher, vermilion flycatcher, belted kingfisher, killdeer, white ibis, roseate spoonbill, green jay and lesser goldfinch are just some of the species seen here. A handicapped-accessible nature trail winds along nearby Carreta Creek. Open during daylight hours. Free. On Birch Avenue. Bishop Chamber of Commerce: 361/584-2214.

Featured Attraction

Like both Espada and Concepcion, this mission was established in 1731. Besides a charming little chapel with an open bell tower, there are ruins of a larger church that was never completed. Restored missionary residence displays artifacts from Spanish colonial period. A short accessible trail runs down to a section of the original San Antonio River. The church still serves community of Berg's Mill, now part of the city. The church is scheduled to be closed for preservation work in 2012.
