Fort Lancaster Historic Site

A Texas Historical Commission property, Fort Lancaster's 82 acres preserve the remnants of one of four posts established in 1855 to protect the overland route between San Antonio and El Paso. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagining the once-impressive establishment of 25 permanent buildings—including officers' quarters, barracks, a blacksmith shop, hospital, sutler's store and bakery—and enjoy the sights, sounds and wildlife of this real place in West Texas. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. Admission charge applies. Eight miles east of Sheffield off I-10 on Texas 290. 432/836-4391. www.visitfortlancaster.com.
