Fort Brown/University Of Texas At Brownsville/Texas Southmost College

Established in 1846, Fort Brown housed troops during the Mexican-American War and defended the border. It changed hands during the Civil War. Noted for the work of William C. Gorgas, later U.S. Army Surgeon General, whose studies led to the eventual control of yellow fever. It was first developed into a large military reservation and was an active post until the end of World War II. The original hospital is now an administration building of Texas Southmost College. Other remaining buildings include the cavalry barracks, medical lab, guardhouse and morgue. International Boulevard at May Street. www.utb.edu.
