Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion del Socorro was established in 1682 as a mission for the Piros, Thanos and Jemes tribes. Originally about 12 leagues from Guadalupe Mission at Paso del Norte and about 7.5 leagues from Ysleta. When a group of Native Americans threatened to revolt, the mission moved closer to Ysleta Mission. An early 19th-century flood changed the course of the Rio Grande and left the village and mission on the Texas side. Present village of Socorro is adjacent to southeast El Paso, 328 South Nevarez Road. 915/859-7718.
