Fort Bliss Monuments And Museums

A U.S. Army post, Fort Bliss was established in 1848 to defend against hostile Native American tribes and to assert U.S. authority over lands acquired after the Mexican War. It was the headquarters for Confederate forces in Southwest during Civil War and was later refitted as a post for military efforts against the much-feared Apache chief Geronimo. Today, it is a U.S. Army Air Defense Center and combat training for allied nations. 915/568-3390.

Buffalo Soldier Monument—This bronze statue is based on the painting, "The Errand of Corporal Ross" by El Paso artist Bob Snead. It is at the Robert E. Lee gate to the Fort.

Fort Bliss Museum and Study Center—Exhibits and artifacts portray the history of America's air and missile defense as well as modern-day technology breakthroughs. Open 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat. Building 1735, Marshall Road.
