Ellis County Courthouse

Elaborate red sandstone and granite structure was built in 1895 for the then-lavish cost of $150,000. Italian artisans were brought in for the exterior stone carving. (The recurring face is said to be that of Mabel Frame, a railroad telegraph operator with whom one sculptor became enamored.) The clock uses a 250-pound wind-up mechanism, and the bell-striker weighs more than 800 pounds. Open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri. 101 W. Main St.

National historic site and studio of famed German sculptress who immigrated to Texas in the 1870s. Her works stand in European palaces, the Texas and U.S. capitols, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art. Largest collection is at her studio here.
