Douglas Macarthur Academy Of Freedom

An affiliate of Howard Payne University, specializing in history and government in the context of Western civilization. Dedicated to Gen. Douglas MacArthur; displays some of his personal souvenirs. Unusual study settings include a Mediterranean Room flanked by replicas of Egyptian tomb statues, a Magna Carta Hall replica of an English castle room, and a replica of a meeting room in Philadelphia's Independence Hall. A magnificent three-story mural adorns the entrance. Tours Mon.–Sat. while school is in session. Austin Avenue. (F.M. 2524) at Coggin Street. 325/649-8700.

Built in 1924, this "painted church" has gone through many renovations. With the most recent, in 1994, restored its original design—an early 20th-century Gothic-style church with a long nave, a pair of side aisles supported by ten columns, stained glass windows and a chancel. 601 N.
