Established in 1858 on Matagorda Bay, it was kept dark during the Civil War
for the benefit of blockade runners. It was reactivated in 1868. Though severely
damaged in the 1942 hurricane, the keeper kept the light operating. It was
condemned after the storm and moved in 1943 from its location on a WWII bombing
range to Point Comfort. It was moved again in 1979 to site next to chamber of
commerce. Texas 35 Bypass near causeway.
