In 1868, Samuel Bell Maxey and his family moved into their fashionable new
home on the south side of town. Built in the High Victorian style, the two-story
frame structure was a fitting home for the West Point-educated Mexican War
veteran, Confederate general and two-term U.S. senator. The house soon became
the town's social center. Today, the home showcases a fine collection of
original family furnishings, clothing and letters, which illustrate the lives of
three successive generations of Maxey family residents. Texas Historical
Commission property. Open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Sun. Admission charge. 812 Church
St. 903/785-5716. www.visitsambellmaxeyhouse.com.
