The Ozark Trails Association was founded in 1913 to guide auto traffic across several states. Member communities erected the reinforced concrete obelisks, which noted the distance to other towns along the route. Tulia was on the southern route. Tulia's marker is one of two in Texas in its original location at the northwest corner of the courthouse square. Distances to and from St. Louis, Mo., and El Paso are delineated on the marker as they were on the original. A historical marker on the square tells the story.
