This site is the final resting place of men involved in the Mier Expedition
against Mexico, as well as 41 of Capt. Nicholas Dawson's soldiers who were
massacred in 1842 by Mexicans at Salado Creek near San Antonio (one of five
Texas streams named Salado). The monument is a 48-foot marker of stone, bronze
and polychrome. It includes a visitor center with a self-guided,
wheelchair-accessible interpretive trail; nature trail; picnic sites and a
playground. Open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. Group tours are available. Call for
