Big Thicket National Preserve.

Big Thicket National Preserve

The preserve consists of 105,000 acres in 15 units spread across seven counties. Several major biological zones combine, including southeastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains, coastal prairies and southwestern deserts, creating unusual combinations of ecosystems and incredible biodiversity. Some of the rare and unusual plant life includes many species of orchids and four species of insect-eating plants. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. every day, except Thanksgiving, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Visitor center is at 6102 F.M. 420, about seven miles north of Kountze. 409/951-6700.

Featured Attraction

This fair began in 1936 with the Texas Centennial Exposition and has been an annual tradition ever since. The three-week fair is the largest expo in North America and hosts more than 3 million visitors a year. Begins last week of September and the first two weeks of October.
