Wildlife at Balmorea State Park
Photographer: J. Griffis Smith

Balmorhea State Park

At historic San Solomon Springs, facilities include a motel, camping and trailer sites, rest rooms with hot showers, shaded picnic areas and a playground. A huge swimming pool is fed by the springs at a rate of up to 28 million gallons daily. With a 77,000-square-foot surface, it is one of the largest man-made pools in the U.S. Scuba dive and swim at own risk. Springs were an important watering place for buffalo, Native Americans and pioneers. Today, the springs supply irrigation needs.

A once existing desert wetland (cienega) has been reconstructed, providing a habitat for two endangered fish species: the Comanche Springs pupfish (Cyprinodon elegans) and Pecos gambusia (Gambusia nobilis).
