Amistad International Reservoir near Del Rio
Photographer: J. Griffis Smith

Amistad National Recreation Area

Amistad NRA is the U.S. portion of the International Amistad Reservoir, formed on the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border. The reservoir has 540 miles of shoreline in Texas. Boating, waterskiing, fishing, birding, camping, hiking and archaeological sites are major attractions. The park offers year-round adventure. Explore the lake and the Pecos, Rio Grande and Devils rivers in motorboats, sailboats, kayaks, houseboats and scuba gear. Water temperatures drop to 54 degrees in winter and rise to 84 in summer. Visitors enjoy swimming from May to October. Some of the oldest pictographs in North America are found in the Amistad area. The National Park Service oversees facilities, interpretive programs, and the protection of cultural and natural resources on the U.S. side of the reservoir. NPS operates five campgrounds—all primitive with grills, vault toilets and covered picnic tables but no hookups—at the national recreation area. Amistad National Recreation Area's Visitor Information Center is open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily. The center has interactive displays, a theater with a short film about the recreation area, a special photographic panel of Panther Cave, information desk and bookstore. Travel 10 miles west of Del Rio on U.S. 90 W.

Boating, camping and hunting fees apply. Other fees may apply. National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands passes are honored. On U.S. 90 just west of Del Rio. 830/775-7491. www.nps.gov/amis.
