The Flower Mound

Rising 50 feet above its surroundings, The Mound is a nod to the town's formative years and comprises nearly 13 acres of countryside populated by wildflowers. The area was once part of the great American Blackland Prairie that ran from Canada to the Rio Grande and from the Rockies to the Mississippi River. The immediate area, of which only 1,000 acres remain out of the original 20 million, was part of the tallgrass prairie. According to local legends, no structure has ever been built on the mound, and no tree has grown on it. Because early pioneer settlers never plowed the land, more than 175 species of wildflowers flourish throughout the year. Visitors also can catch a glimpse of downtown Dallas on the horizon. The site is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Open daily, 24 hours a day. 2500 F.M. 3040. 817/430-1976. www.flower-mound.com.
