The house was built in 1830 by Adolphus Sterne, a prominent merchant and
Texas revolution leader. Sam Houston was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church
here, because Mexico required landholders to be Catholic. Guests in the home
included Thomas J. Rusk, Frost Thorn and Davy Crockett. The New Orleans Greys
camped here on their way to Goliad and the Alamo. Only two families owned the
home before it was gifted to the city in 1958. Collection includes Hoya objects
from the Victorian era, plus objects from the Empire period when the Sternes
owned the home. A small reference library is available. Open 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Tue.–Sat. Donations welcome. 211 S. Lanana St., a block off East Main Street
(Texas 21). 936/560-5426.
